There aren't that many great overlooked psychedelic albums out there waiting to be unearthed -- that's one reason why this is a Japanese CD reissue well worth the high asking price. The Mighty Garvey! is probably Manfred Mann's most obscure album, and will probably run higher on vinyl. It never even got an intact release in America -- where Mercury Records deconstructed and eliminated the jocular unifying faux-concept, and retitled and repackaged it -- and it never charted in England, despite the presence of a number one charting single ('The Mighty Quinn'). The original British version was a lost psychedelic album which, if it wasn't exactly as elaborately conceived or executed as, say, the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band or Magical Mystery Tour, or the Small Faces' Ogden's Nut Gone Flake, still has a lot to recommend it. Coming off of two successive soundtrack projects, the group had a serious backlog of songs and they trotted out the best of them for this release. 'Mighty Garvey,' incidentally, refers to Eddie 'Fingers' Garvey aka Edwin O'Garvey aka Ed Garvey, a nonexistent persona conceived by the band and voiced by Mike d'Abo, who was to Manfred Mann roughly what Buster Poindexter was to David Johansen, except that "
